Thomson Acquires MercuryMD; Founders Will Join New Parent Firm

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Thomson, a provider of integrated information solutions, announced the deal on Thursday.

MercuryMD founders Alan Ying and William Lawson will join Thomson as will MercuryMD's other employees, the company said. MercuryMD employs more than 70 people.

"As part of Thomson, we will accelerate the global delivery of next-generation mobile information systems to more than 3,400 hospitals in North America and 7,000 institutions worldwide, something that we could not achieve independently," Ying said in a statement.

Ying served as chief executive officer of MercuryMD. Lawson was chief software architect.

Ying and Lawson, both of whom are MDs, launched the company in 2001 in search of technology to deal with manual collection of patient data. MercuryMD has developed applications that enable wireless devices to utilize electronic health records.

MercuryMD will be merged with Micromedex, a Thomson Scientific and Healthcare business. Micromedex provides integrated clinical information solutions.
