Elderly Woman Dies In Durham House Fire

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities are investigating three early-morning fires in Durham, including one that was fatal.

Firefighters and rescue crews responded to a fire at

1207 Fleetwood St.

at about 12:50 a.m. Sunday.

Rescue crews tried to revive an elderly woman who was inside her bedroom. The woman, Durham fire investigators said, was identified as Doris Maye Stroud, who was about 80 years old. She died at the scene, officials said.

Firefighters said Sunday evening that the fire appeared to be accidental and started in the living room near several electrical appliances.

Just after 3 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to two single-family dwellings that were burning in the

800 block of Colfax Street

. Authorities said radiant heat from the house at 808 Colfax St. caused the fire to spread to a neighboring house at 806 Colfax St.

Investigators have deemed the fire at 808 Colfax St. suspicious. Authorities said it caught on fire a few weeks ago when it was boarded up. It was not boarded on Sunday, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the Colfax Street fires.
