Durham County Sheriff's Deputy Arrested

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham County sheriff's deputy is on paid administrative leave after being arrested.

Deputy Eric Evans, a former school resource officer at Hillside High School in Durham, was arrested on Monday by Durham police and charged with obtaining property under false pretenses.

Durham police said Evans, 47, is accused of depositing a $90,000 counterfeit check to his bank account on March 13, and that he apparently withdrew a large amount afterward. The bank determined the check, which was supposed to be from a bank in New York, was counterfeit on March 17, authorities said.

Evans made his first court appearance on Tuesday and is expected to appear again in court on July 18.
