The themes for Tuesday's show were songs from the Idols' birth years, and songs from today's Billboard charts.
Daughtry, who was born in 1979, started out strong with Styx's "Renegade." After Daughtry's performance, judge Randy Jackson told the crowd, "America, we got a hot one tonight."
"That was 100 times better than the other performances tonight," said judge Simon Cowell.
Daughtry's second song was Shinedown's "I Dare You." The judges said Daughtry's voice sounded as if it was giving out.
Host Ryan Seacrest asked Daughtry whether, at this point of the competition, fatigue was a factor.
"I'm singing more than I've ever sang in my life," Daughtry replied.
