Cumberland County Budget Proposal Will Mean Larger Class Sizes

The school budget committee Friday agreed not to fill 45 teaching positions, and leave 25 clerical jobs vacant.

The school system is working with a budget that is $1.9 million less than last year's budget. The proposal must now go before the County Board of Education.

"We feel it's a step backwards. That's been one of our primary goals to reduce class size and we've done a tremendous job the last four years. To be heading in a different direction doesn't bode well," said Superintendent of Cumberland County Schools William C. Harrison,

To offset some costs, the school system will also look into whether it should start charging students a student activity fee.
