Johnston County Layoffs Cause For Concern

SMITHFIELD — A series of small layoffs is creating big concern in the Johnston County town of Smithfield.

Channel Master, one of the town's largest employers, has laid off half its work force over the past year -- a total of 745 jobs.

The company has been letting people go in small groups, so the total number caught town leaders by surprise.

About 900 people still work at the plant.
