A snack food called "Munchatas" is the creation of a team of graduate students in N.C. State's Food Science program.
It is a meaty, spicy, mexican mixture in a fried tortilla shell.
Their presentation of product, marketing and development won third place out of 24 competitors in last month's Institute of Food Technologies Expo in New Orleans.
"N.C. State has worked on the product development project for a number of years and this is the first time that we've placed in the top three," says project leader Amy Steiner.
Munchatas have 450 calories per serving, with over half the calories coming from fat.
The team found that consumers reject many low-fat products which can sacrifice taste for health benefits.

Food Technology
, a national magazine for the food science industry.
