North Carolinians lose hundreds of things every year. If you do not come back to get them, they end up in the basement of the State Treasurer's Office. That includes items left in safe-deposit boxes.
Once a year, those items are auctioned off to the public at the State Fairgrounds. All of the money raised helps North Carolina students stay in school.
"We have a great program that has resulted, last year alone, in more than 5,500 North Carolinians getting money for college. It's in our state constitution that the interest on all the unclaimed property that comes into us we invest," says state treasurer Richard Moore.
This year's auction takes place Saturday, July 14 at 9 a.m.
You can preview the items, ranging from jewelry to coins to cameras, Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. or Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Kerr Scott Building.
