School officials are asking for $276 million to $282 million -- 9 percent more than last year.
Incoming Superintendent Dr. Del Burns told the school board that the funding increase is necessary to address the school systems' exploding student numbers. He anticipates that an additional 7,000 students will enroll in the upcoming school year.
The additional funds would fund construction projects and facility upgrades, as well as provide for hiring more teachers and retaining current teachers to support swelling student numbers.
The school board, which is in the early stages of budget approval, has until July to decide on it. The Wake County Board of Commissioners has final budget approval.
