<b>EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C.</b> — School leaders in Edgecombe County will have to start a search for a new superintendent.

Dr. Steve Stone has announced that he plans to resign.

He has been with the Edgecombe County school board since 2002.

Stone has accepted a position as superintendent of Caldwell County schools in the western part of the state.

Mykia Daniel, an eighth grader at Ligon Middle School, was shot and killed on Monday in a north Raleigh apartment. A 16-year-old was charged with her murder.
