Mark Roberts' Raleigh I-540 Update

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — I spoke with the chief DOT construction engineer for our district. Hesays June 29th is the most likely opening date for the next section ofI-540. That section runs approximately 5 miles from Creedmoor Road to Falls of Neuse Road. That includes the Six Forks Road interchange in between.

The man in charge says they are currently doing "punch work," as they callit, minor details like painting lines and grading along the roadside. Someof the work that's left to be done will not impact the overall safety of theroad surface, therefore the DOT thinks that work could be done with the roadopen.

They are confident about the 29th, but a lot of rain is forecast forthis weekend and that could change things.

Some viewers have called and e-mailed saying the Falls of Neuse intersection with 540 doesn't look like it's ready to take traffic. This interchange is a temporary one. The permanent single point urban interchange is under construction just to the south of the temporary on and off ramps.

Work by the DOT and the City of Raleigh is underway to widen Falls of Neuse, but it won't be finished until next year.

Many are anticipating some bad rush hour bottlenecks at Fallsand 540, but the overall expectation is it will give North Raleigh commutersanother option to RTP and RDU. Next, it's onto the next leg of 540, Fallsof Neuse to Capital Boulevard. Expected completion date August 2002. Staytuned for changes.
