Gas Rebate Day Only An April Fool's Joke

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Some drivers were on the wrong end of an April Fool's Day joke a day early. They thought Friday was North Carolina Gas Rebate Day.

The unamused drivers showed up at gas stations under the impression that, for one day only, they could buy gas at a price equal to their birthdate. Drivers born in 1965 were expecting a rate of 65 cents a gallon, but the whole thing was a hoax.

The rumor started on the Internet; radio stations picked it up, and before long, it had people going. Unfortunately, the joke was on them.
