CARY — One of the best traditions on July 4 is grilling out. However, that tradition injures more than 9,000 people each year. There are ways to protect yourself from grilling dangers.

Grills can cause millions of dollars in property damage. Most gas grill fires are caused by gas leaks, propane tanks that are overfilled and tubes that are blocked. The tubes can be blocked by the smallest insects.

"Little spiders build nests in the venturi tubes, and the gas builds up pressure behind it," says Lee Johnson of Barbeques Galore in Cary.

When grilling, it is always a good idea to check the tubes. You should also grill at least 10 feet away from anything that could catch fire.
