Joseph Pack is accused of stealing steaks, watermelons and other food last month. According to police, Pack left the store without ringing up the items. The food was later used to feed members of the UNC football team after a winning game.
"He walked out of the store without paying for items. It was unknown at the time whether he had the permission to that, or whether it was a legitimate donation," says Lt. Ed Sarvis of the Durham Police Department.
Because this involves a personnel issue, Winn Dixie was not able to comment on this case. Pack was released from the Durham County jail on an unsecured $10,000 bond.
The director of sports information at UNC says the university is looking into this matter, but he says he knows very little at this point.
Joseph Pack is not a member of UNC's Educational Foundation. No one is sure what connection if any he has with the university. Both UNC and the NCAA say there is no indication that the players violated any rules.
