After closing the northbound lanes of the interstate for more than five hours, the 50-man crew finally extracted the truck Tuesday afternoon. They found that the Parkertown Road bridge suffered more damage than previously thought.
Workers placed temporary structural support beams under the bridge until it can be permanently repaired.
The tractor-trailer struck the bridge late Monday afternoon, crushing the cab. The driver, Samuel Harvin III, of Rocky Mount, was treated and released from Duke University Medical Center. His passenger, Reco Lowman, 29, died from his injuries.
TheHighway Patrolis still investigating the crash.
The bridge may be closed for a couple of weeks, but theDOTbelieves it can make the repairs without closing the interstate. Tuesday's closure forced northbound travelers to take a 53-mile-long detour.
