Shop 'Til You Drop: Crowds Hunt for Bargains, Parking

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — The day after Thanksgiving is the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. Serious shoppers strategized their battle plans early and hit the stores as soon as they opened Friday.

The doors at Crabtree Valley Mall's Toys R Us store swung open at 5:58 a.m. Dozens of shoppers who had lined up outside filed in looking for bargains.

Parking spots disappeared and shoppers crowded into stores as bargain hunters flocked to the mall to find discounts. Many shoppers were devising clever ways to weave through the crowds.

"We just kind of slink through and say 'excuse me,'" shopper Luise Barnes says.

From Sky 5, it appears that parking spaces are a rare find at Cary Towne Center. WRAL'sCaptain Steve Wileysays the Cary mall is even busier than Crabtree Valley Mall.

Foot scooters seemed to be big sellers Friday, and last year's hot item, Furbys, are selling strong again this season. Robotic puppy toys are also expected to be hot gifts this year.
