Fayetteville Tech Starts Construction On New Day Care Training Center

"One of the most difficult problems is child care costs," said student Deborah Nixon, who almost could not afford to get her degree from the school.

Through a grant, Nixon found a way to juggle school and motherhood. For others, going back to school could soon get even easier.

Construction is set to begin on an Early Childhood Educational Center at FTCC. The purpose is twofold.

Parents who go to school at FTCC can keep their children at a campus day care for a discounted rate. Students in the early childhood development program will get superior experience.

"For our students, they'll see the best model for caring for children so when they graduate and go to work for other centers, they can carry good methodology with them," said Sharon Morrissey, Vice President of Academic and Student Services at FTCC.

Child care experts say the concept will improve quality of care throughout the region. It is expected to bring up employee wages and help centers receive better ratings under the state's new system.

"The teachers need to understand about early childhood development and the curriculum," said Eva Hansen, Director of Cumberland County Partnership for Children. "Those things are taught at this facility. It's not something you can fake but integrate into your everyday practice."

The center will also be opened to managers and child care workers for recertification. The $3.5 million facility is expected to open in 2001.
