H.S. Football Game to Resume Tuesday Under Tight Security

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL — School leaders in Chapel Hill are talking about security, after reports of gunfire at a high school football game between Chapel Hill and Durham Jordan Friday night.

It was late in the third quarter as Chapel Hill was leading Durham's Jordan High when shots were suddenly fired. Players ran from the field and spectators were ordered to leave.

Everyone left without really knowing what happened. Three days later, there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

Monday, school staff members gathered to talk about how they should respond.

"The fact that something has occurred here of a crisis nature, we felt we've given an appropriate response to it. But anytime anything happens, you have to give serious consideration to perhaps modifying what you've done," Robert Kepner, Chapel Hill H.S. assistant principal.

Students are on break until Wednesday, but counselors are on hand to help.

"They have every right to be frightened and I can understand why the feel that way," says counselor Jeff Reilly. "Our job is to help them process, to debrief them, to help them become part of the solution to make this a better campus so they do feel safe."

Some students say they are more angry than frightened.

"It was homecoming and we were really excited and it was just kind of ruined," says student Brandon Mayes.

The game is scheduled to resume Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Chapel Hill High School. Access to the game will be restricted.

Students from both schools who show proper ID will be allowed in. Parents and spectators may also be asked to show identification.

School officials say there will be extra security at the game as well as metal detectors.
