Bond Supporters Stage Wake Jail Tour

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Seldom will you find people willing to go to jail, but Monday morning some people got up bright and early for a tour of the Wake County jail.

The group, "Friends of Wake County," put together the tour to show why it supports the $20 million bond issue that goes before voters next month.

The jail is so overcrowded, most inmates sleep on the floor. The jail houses people who are awaiting trial, and those who have already been sentenced.

Sheriff John Baker says there is a need for more jail space.

"From my perspective," Baker said, "it's for their protection. Anytime we can get violent criminals off the streets then that impacts their protection."

The $20 million bond package for jails would help finance development of the Hammond road detention facility, which is intended to relieve jail over-crowding.
