DURHAM — Strangers in Durham are coming together to help a man fighting for his life.

Hernardez Lopez, a migrant worker, is being treated at Durham Regional Hospital Thursday after he fell off a truck. Doctors and nurses spent hours on the phone with theU.S. State Departmentand other agencies, trying to track down his relatives in Mexico.

The staff wants to help his family fly to the U.S. to be by his side.

"I could just feel it in my heart and I thought, how strange it would be to be in a foreign country and not have anybody," says nurse Jill Russell. "We didn't know of anybody, so we took on the responsibility of being his family."

One doctor has offered to let Lopez's family stay with him. The staff says they may have found someone to fly the family in from Mexico.

Anyone who would like to help is asked to call Durham Health Partners at Durham Regional Hospital at919-470-4000.
