Trixie was once an orphan but no more.
Berlie and Dorothy Slaughter adopted Trixie from the SPCA of Wake County. Most adoptions cost $95, covering spaying or neutering services and vaccinations. A program called Purina Pets for People pays $50 of that cost for senior citizens.
That cuts the cost of SPCA adoption to less than half for seniors.
The program is renewed every year but money left unused by September 30 will be lost and the unused money determines next year's funding level. The SPCA of Wake County has $2000 left in the fund, and they want it put to good use.
"If we can get 40 senior citizens down to the SPCA of Wake County to adopt an animal, then we'll be happy," says Mondy Lamb, of SPCA of Wake County
Not every animal in this center is suitable for a senior citzen's home.
"We think that older pets are really wonderful for seniors," says Kim Fisher, adoption center director. "Older pets are calmer, whether it be a dog or a cat."
The Slaughters chose a dog with a little bit of puppy left in it. But love covers a multitude of inconveniences.
To qualify for the program, the applicant must be at least 60 years old. The adoption center of the SPCA of Wake County is at 327 Highway 70 East in Garner.
