CUMBERLAND COUNTY — When you go to get a gun permit in Cumberland County, you can now get a free gun lock.
The Sheriff's Office launchedProject Home Safeon Tuesday. The nationwide program is sponsored by theNational Shooting Sports Foundation.
Gun manufacturers donate money to the foundation so they can buy gun locks. Leaders say the program is not about gun control, but gun safety.
"The idea is to save lives," says gun manufacturer Greg Foster. "It's typically something like that -- when a child gets curious or an adult gets curious and tried to load a weapon and accidentally shoots somebody."
Cumberland County is the 13th county in North Carolina to launch Project Home Safe.
