TheFayetteville City Councilhas a couple of different options for filling the seat. It could appoint Mayor Pro Tem Milo McBryde to the position, or it could split the remaining term between three council members.
"Our council is divided as to who will do the better job as mayor," said city councilman Curtis Worthy. "We have a mayor pro tem who's doing a fantastic job, and what can I say? If it's not broke, don't fix it."
Gretta Reece is not a leader in local politics, but you can find her sitting in Fayetteville's city council meetings each month. Having lived in the city for more than 40 years, she has a vested interest in the council's decisions.
"I don't know why it's taking so long," Reece said. "We need the mayor. It's a slot we had, and we still need a mayor. I think it should be filled. But the question is with whom?"
Reese may get her answer in August, when McBryde believes the council will make a decision on Dawkins' replacement.
