Raleigh police and the Wake Sheriff's Department were called to the scene just before 3 p.m. after receiving a call about suspicious activity at the convenience store. The first officer who arrived on the scene heard gunshots and immediately called for backup.
Police initially thought they had a hostage situation on their hands, but that was not the case.
"It was a situation which we had some difficulty making contact because the telephone was off the hook," says Maj. J.R. Knox of the Raleigh Police Department. "As soon as we made contact, the individual came out and surrendered."
Thirty minutes after the ordeal began, the gunman, 17-year-old Rasuan Iran Wright, and the store manager came out of the store. The gunman surrendered to police and was taken into custody.
Neighboring streets, which had been closed to traffic just after police arrived, were soon reopened. Police are looking at the surveillance video of the incident to determine what charges will be filed.
No one was hurt in the incident.
Wright is being charged with discharging a firearm in an occupied building and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
