Durham Continues Computerizing Old Gun Registrations

Posted Updated

DURHAM — A major backlog will not prevent Durham from keeping its handgun registration program.

One person has been responsible for transferring thousands of handgun registrations into a police computer.

Police Chief Teresa Chambers wanted to pull the plug because the clerk is only up to the letter "G" after two years.

Thursday, the city council decided to eliminate the position, but solicit volunteers to continue putting the data into a computer.
