Safety at Local Playgrounds Studied

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — It's not all fun and games at local playgrounds as designers and operators learn to make play safer for children.

Area parks and recreation officials spent 10 hours Monday immersed in the dangers of playground equipment. They determined that safety could be greatly increased by use of soft surfaces under play structures.

Scott Payne of N.C. State University says most playground injuries are caused by falls.

Surveys show that 75 percent of injuries to children on playgrounds are caused by falls from equipment, and that 200,000 children were injured last year in such falls.
