Israeli, Palestinian Forces Engage In Cyber Warfare

RALEIGH — Israeli and Palestinian leaders are battling to enforce a truce to stop the fighting in the Middle East. The battle has been brewing on the Internet as well.

Pakistani-based hackers attacked the U.S. Web site belonging to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The Web site was defaced with pro-Palestinian slogans.

It was closed, but not before credit card numbers and e-mail addresses were stolen. Other sites based in Israel have been hacked, including those of colleges and religious organizations.

Both Palestinian and Israeli Web sites have been hacked, some from within the region and others from distant countries.

TheIsraeli Ministry of Foreign AffairsWeb site has been sabotaged by "virtual vandalism," andThe Knesset Web sitehas had problems.

Palestinians have their own official Web site, thePalestinian National Authority. The Web site has had problems, but Friday it posts stories of tragedy and pictures of defiance in the face of power.
