DURHAM — June 18, 1996, 8:57 a.m. EDT

Summer's sweltering temperatures make swimming pools popular places -- but they can also be dangerous. A Durham boy is in critical condition after nearly drowning in a city pool just before noon Monday.

Quentin Williams was diving into the deep end of the indoor Rock Quarry pool when a lifeguard realized the child hadn't resurfaced.

The nine-year-old was pulled out unconscious. CPR was performed until paramedics arrived.

The boy was initially taken to Durham Regional Hospital, then transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

He had been in the pool with about 100 others when the incident occurred. He had been brought to the pool by his private day camp for an outing
