Voter Turnout Called Amazingly Low

With an extremely low turnout for the run-off election, some people wonder if it's worth the cost to taxpayers.

Less than four percent of eligible voters cast ballots Tuesday. Run-offs are held to select a winner when no one receives 40 percent of the vote in the initial primary election.

While few people cast votes in such races they cost taxpayers more than $1.5 million.

North Carolina is one of 10 states to conduct a second primary. Many say the parties should just take the top vote getters in the first primary, whether or not the 40 percent total is achieved.

Representative Mickey Micheaux (D-Durham) is one of them.
