Raleigh police have charged Rodney D. Fryar, 22, with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. They say that on Thursday night Fryar shot two men, one of whom died.
Dowen M. Giddings, 21, of Bunnalley Court died of a gunshot wound; a friend, Michael A. McCray, 22, was treated for his wounds and subsequently released from Wake Medical Center.
Police said a night of angry words between two carloads of young men led to the gunfire on Green Road. The disagreement began at the shopping center at Brentwood and New Hope Church Roads. The men separated without further incident, but met -- police believe by coincidence -- at a mutual friend's house later that night.
Afterward, Giddings, McCray and two other men were sitting in a car in front of 4112 Green Road, when about 11:30 p.m., Fryar allegedly walked up to the car and fired a handgun.
McCray, newly moved to Raleigh from Bayboro, was unfamiliar with the city and immediately drove to the first place he could think of for help -- the McDonald's restaurant on Capital Boulevard. Rescue teams drove the wounded men to the hospital.
Police said further charges may be lodged against Fryar in regard to the two men who had been sitting in the back seat of McCray's car
