A Nash Correctional Center inmate is in critical condition in a Rocky Mount hospital after an assault this morning.

Two inmates were digging a ditch when one allegedly accused the other of not working fast enough, then assaulted him with a pickax. Corrections officers used pepper spray to stop the fight.

The injured inmate is 36-year-old Don Debraal.

Harold Graham, 23, is accused in the assault and is currently confined.

Debraal is serving time on a conviction of taking liberties with a child. Graham is incarcerated for second-degree murder
