Deputy Impersonator Conning Durham Residents

DURHAM — May 15, 1996 - 3:58 p.m. EDT

The Durham Sheriff's Department says someone is trying to get money out of residents by pretending to be a deputy.

They say the impersonator telephones citizens and asks for money to buy bullet-proof vests and other equipment. He then says he is keeping a list of those who do not donate, and that they will be denied assistance from the department when they need it.

The department wants to make it clear that it does not solicit funds in this manner
