Tobacco Road Golf Club

SANFORD — Why not kick off this year'sDream 18at one of newest and most talked about courses in North Carolina -- Sanford's Tobacco Road.

"On this particular hole, it's kind of like Arizona meets Scotland. We have some desert features, and we also have the heather waving in the background," says Joe Gay, Tobacco Road's director of golf.

The par 4, 16th hole winds and dips for 321 yards.

"The hole is actually much more forgiving than it appears, but it'll work on you mentally," Gay said. "We have about a 170 yard carry to carry this berm that fronts the fairway. The old tobacco flue in the backdrop, the black post that's sticking out, is a great aiming point."

Joe had no problem clearing the mound and finding the fairway, but Jeff forgot to eat his Wheaties and ended up in the sand with some ground to cover.

Jeff had about 132 yards left, and landed a great shot on the back of the green.

Joe worked from the short grass 84 yards away, and also hit the green leaving both of them with birdie opportunities. Joe's the pro, so he expected to nail his 10 footer to find the cup. But for Jeff, birdies are a rarity. He has never had one in the two previous years of the Dream 18.

However, Jeff finished the 16th hole at Tobacco Road, a 321 yard Par 4, with a score of 3.

To play the great layout, the fees range from $48 to $78, and Jeff finally made a birdie.
