"I feel like most of it is like Piedmont terrain -- rolling hills, not a lot of dirt was moved out here" says Club Pro Jonathan York. "Just used the lay of the land."
Two courses spread out over the Grandover Area, but we focus on the par 5 18th hole on the east course. Off the tee, there are 5 bunkers that look like a tiger paw."If you can just keep it just left of the bunkers...puts you in a nice flat area for your second shot."You aim for them, but Jonathan says don't dare go in... they will eat you up!"You can see the walls are very steep which forces you to hit a short iron out to get the ball into play and when you do that you're left with a little over 200 yards to the green which over water is intimidating."
The green is well protected by water on the left with some sand sprinkled around. Unless you're highly accurate with a long iron or fairway wood, the safe route is a lay up to the right. That'll leave you with a short iron into the green and tight enough for a birdie putt. Or if you're like me, It'll take -another- short iron to reach the green.
Jonathan gets it close enough for a gimmie par, and I've got some ground to cover for my par. It wouldn't be a Dream 18 without a missed putt!
Grandover is in the process of building a 240 room hotel to compliment it's 2 golf courses. You can't get a room until January, but you can golf at Grandover any day of the week for $65. That includes a cart, but no guarantee of birdies and pars!
