Broughton High's Golf Team Goes For Third Straight State Title

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Winning a state championship is a rare feat, winning two straight can be considered exceptional, but three straight championships is almost impossible. This year, theBroughton High Schoolgolf team has a shot at the exclusive triple crown.

Only three high school golf teams in state history have won three consecutive state championships.

"They know that they have won the state championships twice in a row, and they are not about to lose an opportunity to lose it three times in a row," says golf coach Phil Ratliff.

A fourth straight title is possible because the team is anchored by juniors, the same players that led Broughton to two previous titles.

"Right now, we just want to concentrate on the third one," says Broughton High School golfer Ward Marslender. "That one would definitely be something special. All of the guys on the team are friends. I think it is really special what we have going."

The student golfers are not just succeeding on the course.

"Their academic grade point averages are outstanding," Ratliff says. "They are a fine group of young men. I just can't praise them enough on and off the course."

In 1974, Broughton's golf team won their third straight state title. This team believes they can carry on that tradition during the state championship in three weeks.
