Torbush Reportedly Out As UNC Football Coach

Several sources say the Tar Heels' upcoming game against Duke will be his last on the Carolina sidelines.

Torbush was the choice of Tar Heel players to replace Mack Brown as Carolina's head coach. If Saturday's game against Duke is his last, he will leave as he came in, a player's coach.

Brandon Spoon, UNC linebacker, says a lot of the players loved Torbush.

"He is the reason I am here," Spoon said. "He recruited a lot of the players, and we back him 100 percent."

"I think he is a great man," Merceda Perry, UNC linebacker, said. "He is one of the main reasons I came to this university, he was a great individual not only as a coach but as a person.

If Torbush knows he is out, he is keeping that fact to himself.

"I have told our football team just like I told myself as well as the coaching staff, our focus, right now, is on Duke University," Torbush said. "I really hate that this has become a 'media circus' the last 24 hours."

"I apologize to our football team, and I apologize to the coaching staff," Torbush said. "I will address serious issues after the season."

Whether you liked Carl Torbush or not, UNC's poor record on the field is not up for debate. It's been all down "Heel" since Torbush took charge.

The team was 12-and-1 in Mack Brown's last season though Torbush did coach the Gator Bowl win.

In Torbush's first full season as coach, the Heels finished 7-and-5.

This year, they're 2-and-8 with one game left.

An official announcement could be made late Saturday night or Sunday.

Possible successors to the UNC coaching position includes former Auburn coach Terry Bowden or Georgia's Jim Donnan.
