Tarboro Senior Rises Above the Crowd

Posted Updated

TARBORO — Tarboro High School's Casey Collins is quite a student-athlete. A three-sport star, she's a three-year captain of the Vikings basketball team, this season averaging almost 18 points per game. She loves to play, and she loves to win.

"I have an attitude about me, but it's a good attitude. It's one that wants to win and one that's willing to push your team to go further. When I'm on the court, everybody else is there with me and they're happy, they're up. And when we're winning and stuff, I just try to push people to do better," Collins says.

Coach Jamie Willoughby says Collins is an extra hard worker. "She stays in the gym year-round. There's never an off-season for her and truly works extremely well while she's in there," Willoughby says.

"I have a desire to win and so when I'm out there on the court, I'm going to give it all that I can, and if that night maybe I'm off or something, I'm going to pass the ball to my teammates and keep passing, to help them to score and help us to win," Collins says. "I'd do anything for my team."

Off the court, Collins is a people person. She's president of the senior class, president of the national honor society, and carries a 3.77 grade point average.

"I teach her math and right now she's in a calculus class. I wouldn't say it comes easy to her, but she still has one of the higher grades in the class because she just continues to work and work and work until she gets it. She's one of the most meticulous students I've ever taught," says teacher Mike Jones.

Casey Collins is the winner of this week's Extra Effort Award. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
