Part of Highway 12 and Many Beaches Reopen Along the Outer Banks

Friday, the sun came out for a little while in Dare County, but some residents still cannot get home.

State police blocked Highway 12 all day Friday. The only people allowed south of Nags Head were permanent residents with proof of address.

Crews continue pushing back the sand that had covered the roads in Dare County. Now, there is standing water and some sand still left in some places, but Highway 12 is passable.

In the communities of Rodanthe and Salvo, damage looked to be minimal. There were just a few shingles missing from some houses.

In Avon, residents and visitors were back on the streets, and business owners were getting ready to open up again.

However, the Labor Day Weekend looks like it will be pretty tough.

"Economically, for businesses, it's really going to be awful. As for the locals, we'll survive. We always do," said business owner Douglas Price.

South of Avon, Highway 12 is a much different story. People in that area say the road is completely washed out.

Only two beaches, Hatteras Island and South Nags Head, are closed. However, town leaders are meeting and are trying to decide if they can open those beaches soon.

Kitty Hawk, Duck, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Roanoke Island and Manteo are all open.
