Lee County Students in Class on Monday

Posted Updated

SANFORD, N.C. — Lee County school students will be in their classrooms on Memorial Day, the result of tight scheduling.

Thirteen of the county’s public schools will be open Monday. The only school that has the day off is Lee Early College, where classes have finished for the year.

County school officials said they could find no way to get in the required 180 school days without holding classes on Memorial Day. The district was able to make Memorial Day a holiday for the 2007-08 year, however.

In Wake County, Memorial Day 2009 (May 25) is scheduled to be a class day for some year-round school tracks, according to the district's Web site.

State law forbids districts from opening before Aug. 25 or letting out after June 10.
