Mother Remembered at High School Football Game

Posted Updated

CLAYTON — A Clayton High School football team's play-off game took on a different meaning Saturday evening.

Kick-off for the Clayton Comets against Winston-Salem's Carver High School meant more than winning.

It meant dealing with a personal tragedy -- the death of a teammate's mother whose life and spirit had touched the whole team.

Vicky Bagley lost her nine-year battle with cancer on Thanksgiving. She was not just mom to Number 85, Chris Bagley, but she was like the whole team's mom.

"When (Vicky's death) happened on Thursday it basically just brought our team closer," says head coach Gary Fowler.

"It's been a long battle," says Tom Bagley says of his wife's cancer. "We both fought for almost nine years. It's over, so we're just kind of taking it one day at a time."
