Sanderson H.S. Star Wins Extra Effort Award

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Liz Bailey is a honor student and an all-star in soccer and basketball at Sanderson High School.

"She has a passion for the game. She is very competitive, and she does not want to lose," says basketball coach Cindy Branscome. "Liz has an uncanny ability to read the floor like no other player. If you see her play, you are amazed. She does it all."

Bailey leads the basketball team in scoring, steals, rebounds, blocks and assists.

"When I step on the basketball court, I like to set up my teammates more than myself," Bailey says. "I don't mind scoring, but I like to get the assists. I'll go out there and get everything in every game."

"She has the heart of a competitor. She wants to do well. She sets high standards. She wants to do a good job at whatever she is doing," says teacher Andy Fowler.

Branscome says she may never coach another player like Bailey.

"There is no one like Liz Bailey that I have ever coached, and I don't know if there will be another one that I'll coach, but to have the opportunity to coach this young lady for four years, I am blessed and very lucky," Branscome says.

Liz Bailey is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
