Hundreds of residents packed Moncure Elementary School Wednesday to discuss their concerns over a proposed 200-acre landfill. It would serve seven counties and five separate states.
Rev. Carrie Bolton, a concerned resident, had some choice words to describe the situation.
"No amount of money is worth killing the human spirit and destroying communities," she says.
Members of Waste Industries were given a cold welcome, despite their attempt to deliver a positive message.
"We hope that they see that it is really going to be virtually no impact on their community," says Waste Industries spokesman Phil Carter. "The county has an opportunity to make positive revenue from the host fees."
A number of Moncure residents believe the price is too high to risk losing the character of their community.
"Just to have a trash dump come in would decrease value from homes, properties and everything else," says concerned resident Mary Page.
County commissioners will meet Tuesday to decide whether to enter into a franchise agreement with Waste Industries.
