Homes Evacuated After Live World War I Shrapnel Shell Found in Cumberland County

FAYETTEVILLE — There were some tense moments in southernCumberland CountyMonday afternoon after a live round of military ammunition was found.

Nearby homes were evacuated, and John Carter Road was shut down to traffic asFort Braggexplosives experts were called in.

A resident called police after finding the old World War I, 1902 shrapnel round just a few feet from the road. Firefighters say if the round had detonated, it could have been deadly.

"My neighbor called me and told me that there was something out here within 50 or 500 feet and for everybody to evacuate," said resident Magalene Murphy.

The shell was taken to Fort Bragg and exploded.

Investigators say they do not know where the round came from or why it was dumped in Cumberland County.
