Cary Breaks Ground on Community Athletic Park

Posted Updated

CARY — Fields of dreams will soon be a reality in Cary where town leaders broke ground on a new 127-acre athletic park Wednesday.

The first phase of the Thomas Brooks Park project will cost $4 million and will include four softball fields, two basketball courts, two soccer fields, a playground and a walking path.

"What we tried to do was group all of the active facilities, because people who like to do the same event can come and congregate and socialize together. We can offer special events and tournaments to help bring in some revenue to help pay for some of these facilities when we build them this way," says Mary Barry, Cary Parks and Recreation director.

Not everyone is happy about the park. Some nearby residents say it will ruin their countryside.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2001.
