EDGECOMBE COUNTY — Edgecombe County detectives are trying to figure out who killed a woman and left her body in a trash bag near a major highway.
Detectives say Monday night, a passerby found the trash bag in the weeds along Chinquapenn road off Highway 64.
When police arrived, they found the body of 40-year-old Elizabeth Robbins. Robbins was shot twice in the chest.
"We do not think it was a random killer from the evidence that we found," said James Knight, Edgecombe County sheriff. "The individual knew the victim, so we are searching that aspect of it."
Deputies are following some leads in the case but are still searching for a suspect.
Robbins lived in Macclesfield, which is near Pinetops in Edgecombe County.
