ROXBORO — One man is dead and at least two police officers are injured after a five-county car chase Wednesday afternoon.

The chase ended outside Roxboro on Highway 158 about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chase reportedly started in Rockingham County where deputies were looking for a murder suspect.

According to the Highway Patrol, a Rockingham County deputy went to a house east of Reidsville, where it was believed a suspect in a Greensboro murder was located.

As officials approached the home, two males and a female jumped into a blue Camaro and a chase ensued.

The chase continued through Alamance, Caswell and Orange Counties before ending in Person County.

Shots were reportedly fired by one of the suspects.

Two cars belonging to law enforcement officers crashed; one was from Rockingham County, the other from Alamance County. Two Alamance County deputies reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The Highway Patrol says it twice tried to use stop sticks to stop the Camaro. The first attempt failed. The suspect drove around the stop sticks during the second attempt.

The chase ended when the suspects pulled over as they approached a roadblock set up by the Person County Sheriff's Department.

Officials with the Highway Patrol say a male passenger apparently shot himself after the ordeal was over. Person County Sheriff Dennis Oakley identified the dead man as 26-year-old Sammy Soots Jr.

Soots' cousin Michael was charged with felony eluding arrest. Kathy Tidwell, 27, was charged with aiding and abetting. All three are from Gibsonville.

The SBI is investigating the incident.
