CUMBERLAND COUNTY — Fayetteville has decided to drop its natural gas deal with the South Carolina utility companySCANA, but some say that may not last forever.

Cumberland County has only one gas resource -- the Transco pipeline system. The city considered SCANA to bring another source of natural gas to the area. However, a disagreement over cost caused thePublic Works Commissionand city leaders to halt the deal, which could impact economic growth.

"A good resource for natural gas in an area does bring about more inquiries as far as new plants and new industries," says Steven Blanchard, PWC general manager.

Blanchard says the city could still consider SCANA for a future plant. Leaders are going over proposals from American Electric Power andCarolina Power and Lightfor the gas pipeline.
