Durham Woman Discovers Shooting Victim on Greenway

Posted Updated

DURHAM — A Durham woman made a grisly discovery while taking a walk Wednesday morning. Now, authorities are investigating a homicide.

The woman discovered the body of Allen Wayne Hall. The 38-year-old homeless man had been shot in the back, on the greenway near the 800 block of Dacian Road.

Durham Maj. Dwight Pettiford says the incident is the first of its kind since Durham's greenway system was created four years ago.

"This is a very high-use walking trail. It's very visible," Pettiford said of the area where the body was found. "It's designed to have clear cut on both sides, and so this act was probably done at night or very early in the morning when there was lower, slow pedestrian traffic around in this part of town."

Resident Maria Horvath claims she knew the man found on the trail. She described him as a wanderer or drifter.

Horvath added that the trail is not safe and that it becomes a well-traveled thoroughfare for drug dealers at night.

"We hear gun shots all the time. I had a bullet hole in the back of my car about three months ago.

Durham police are investigating, and say they currently have no suspects.
