— A 13-year-old girl was killed Tuesday night and her mother was wounded in a shooting at a north Raleigh apartment complex, police said.

The shootings occurred at about 9 p.m. Tuesday at Remington on the Green Apartments at 4401 Green Road, police said.

Gelnirys Ortega was pronounced dead at the scene. Milagros Ortega, 33, was transported to WakeMed for treatment. There was no word on her condition early Wednesday.

Police haven't released any information about a possible suspect or a motive in the shootings. But Raleigh Police Department spokesman Jim Sughrue said Wednesday morning that the shootings weren't random acts of violence.

"We are still not at a point in the investigation where we can discuss specifics, but it can be said that the investigation has determined that the cases did not stem from random contact with strangers," he said.

Aurthorities said residents in the apartment complex should not be concerned about their safety as it relates to this incident.

Gilnyris was a student at West Milbrook Middle School.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Raleigh Police Department’s Detective Division at 919-890-3398 or CrimeStoppers at 919-226-CRIME.

2 flaggers in this room, watch out...I warned you all yesterday!

Who decided these people were poor? Who decided the mother had to settle for living in those apartments because she was poor? Does anyone know for a fact that the mother was illegal? Even if she was in all likelihood her daughter was not. FYI---there are many illegal immigrants who are actually doing quite well for themselves here and opt to live in moderate housing situations...one because it's a step up from where they lived before and two because they choose to use their money in another manner. Clearly, there is more to the story that will be reported as the investigation continues.

This is by no mean the "bad side of town" You should really look up what it cost a month to stay in the brand new remodeled apartments.. I can't believe how many ignorant people are still in this world.. This shouldn't happen to anyone!!!!!!!

God be with this family!! Rest in piece Gelnirys Ortega!!

It's so troubling that there have been so many cases in the last couple of years of children being shot. I, too, hope for swift and sure justice for the perp.

Oh, and because I'm a curmudgeon, I have to ask what your thinking is, vergirl. You're in the wrong place to push a political agenda, and a goofy, pointless one like this:

Student@WMMS - I'm making a point...that because the last name is of Hispanic origin, some want to jump to the conclusion that they're illegals. Some also find no sympathy for this mom who just lost her child because she was living in an apartment in an area labeled "drug zone." I do not think that is fair of people to say. I did not know these people, nor did I know either of the people shot dead in Goldsboro last week, but the assumptions that were made were maddening, and I took a fair amount of hits on another thread because I was appalled by the lack of concern for either of the victims. It bothers me that perfect strangers are so quick to judge based on a race, the origin of a last name, an individual's marital status, or where they live.

For an 8th grader, you sound very intelligent in your posts, and I thank you for them.

I think it is sad that we can't just be sorry for the loss of a young life, without having to make it a racial/social status issue.

Jman, you are exactly right, but unfortunately there are some shallow minds that post in here. Some people can see no further than these people last name. The fact that two people lost there lives went unnoticed without compassion to some because there last name suggest they were hispanic. It's digusting, but we must overlook those and stick to the topic at hand.

Understood jman, I think most of us have moved past that and are trying not to engage those who try to provoke others. Ignore those who drag race into it.

Why is it that every discussion eventually hinges on race ?

A little girl who probably hasn't even learned that garbage yet is dead for gods sake !!!
