NASH COUNTY — Southern Nash senior Jamie Marshburn has accomplished quite a bit as she enters her final three months of high school.

Marshburn played on the Firebirds' basketball team last winter, but track may be her best sport as she tries to make it back to the state championships this spring.

"She is so unselfish. She is so concerned about others as well as herself about getting the best out of everybody," says track coach Brian Foster. "I think that is something that has earned her respect from not only her coaches, but her classmates and her teachers."

Marshburn, a honor student, was named Southern Nash High School's best all-around student and most courteous student. Her teacher, Jeny Eakin, says Marshburn always does more than she is required to do.

"The first day, she came in and she always asked questions. She wanted to know where she went wrong if she made a mistake," she says.

Basketball coach Scott Collie says Marshburn's good nature can be traced back to her upbringing.

"If you meet her parents one time, you will understand what they are all about, and I think that trickled down to her, and I think that is what has made her what she is," he says.

"My mom and dad have been very supportive to me and my sports. They are always there for me, giving me advice about everything," she says.

Jamie Marshburn is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award. Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
